Floating Markets


After passing through Bangkok just to go for a suit fitting and then get out as quickly as we possibly could (believe me you'd do it too) we headed to the wee town of Damnoen Sudoek and its floating markets. This was our first experience of the Thai Bus service...and to be fair it was amazingly good for just over a pound and they even made sure we got off in exactly the right place...things get a bit hard out of Bangkok with no English signs and no signs with any recognisable lettering on them!

The hotel we used was deserted and a little too close to the eerie sort of setting used for horror movies...I think Psycho was mentioned. Surprisingly tho we did all survive the night, even after ripping off our hotel receptionist by getting our boat trip 500Baht cheaper - my god the manager did not look happy about it! The boat trip was quality though - even if the floating markets were a little contrived for us tourists!

On the way out they were blatantly asking if we had bought anything and our guide was definitely getting a little annoyed, as were the stall holders, at the way we managed to hold onto our cash. You could here their distgusted tones in their voices even if we couldn't understand! All changed at the end though with me buying a lamp and dinner set thing and Anne buying a hugemongus wood carving (which was a nightmare to post home costing 40 quid!) and Martin got a dinner set too. Oh and then there were these amazing coconut-covered banana things - you have no idea how good the
