Kanchanaburi Evenings Out!

So what's great about Kanchanaburi? Well, the Bridge over the River Kwai, hot springs and things, but especially the silly names on every pub and Martins revitalised need to play with his food! Take for instance the example here - Katie's request to eat pancake was met with one schlong-shaped pancake mix of batter rammed down with a fork!

The same night having looked at the menu and decided that I wouldn't know what to do with a huge whole fish on a plate I cleverly managed to order exactly that. Turned out to be awesome though, if a little on the large size!

On the downside there didn't seem to be many travellers about anywhere...making most of the bars rather quiet. So...in an attempt to find out where the action was we asked. I think she misunderstood...we were greeted with two Thai girls who looked a little too keen to meet us...turns out that wasn't the most choice turn of phrase to use!

We made excuses and left for a less touristy bar which was a nice refuge...then headed for meatballs and noodles from a street stand as a midnight snack. The Changs had taken hold by now and at a scarily fast rate! So off we trotted to another bar to play pool with a rather large grasshopper. The rest of the night there was fun, though once again we were hassled by ladies of the night constantly demanding drinks! We got to chose the music at least, and eventually about 4am we escaped the clutches of the Thai Death Whores unscathed and ran for our hostel! One thing though - never give out your actual name! Everytime we walked past any of these places for the rest of our time they shouted out "Hello Martin and Ian, come and join!"...

It didn't rest there...next evening the wife of a French pub owner tried to set us up with her friend from out of town who didn't speak a word of English. We only went to that pub for the tabletennis dammit! No not the ping pong.

After being unable to eat an entire squid (baby ones in one mouthful) since it sat on a plate looking at me 2 years ago when Emma and me were at the Grand Canyon I finally overcame my fear...after many, many attempts to stick the thing in my mouth! Turns out whole baby squid are actually really nice and what's more they don't sting you with their tentacles. I've no idea why I thought this!!

On the final day of our stay we bought a beautiful blue guitar...and pleased the people of the campsite very much with Martin's new-found skill on the guitar taught by yours-truely! Just check out the results - Bob Dylan would be so very very proud!
